The Big Bang Theory: The Pants Alternative

While we wait for the imminent end of Leonard and Penny’s relationship we shall enjoy some Sheldon antics. I’ll admit sometimes Sheldon gets a little too cartoonish, but this was just right.

Sheldon learned that he would finally be given the Chancellor’s Award. Although Sheldon thinks this is about three years too late, he is happy to finally be receiving what he deserves. Only one small problem, he has to give a speech in order to accept. See, Sheldon has crippling stage fright that results in him fainting at the mere thought of speaking to a room with enough people that can trample him. Not even some encouraging words for a former member of the Corn Queen’s Court.

The group decides to help, figuring that if they veil their help in a way Sheldon would appreciate, he would take the bait. They go with an X-Men theme and even though he admits they’re all poor mutant powers he agrees as long as there is a name change, the C-Men.

Raj is up first and tries to teach Sheldon a few meditation techniques. He first asks Sheldon to think of the one place he feels at home. Aptly, its his Sim City, Sheldonopolis. After Sheldon gets lost in his City and a Godzilla-like creature comes to attack, Raj gets frustrated and leaves. Confirming Sheldon’s theory that meditation is all hokum.

Next Penny takes Sheldon shopping. He needs a suit for the dinner anyway, why not get in some retail therapy. Sheldon is not impressed with Penny’s taste and tries on a few of what he decides are acceptable suits. Bedazzled and striped and for proms are what he deems correct for the occasion, but relinquishes his ideals and gets the single colored “clown suit” Penny had picked out for him in the beginning.

Since Wolowitz is just pretending to care, the last bit of help Sheldon receives is from Leonard. He tries to get to the root of the problem through some psychoanalysis therapy but the table quickly turn, and Sheldon traps Leonard with his mommy issues. After seeing Leonard breakdown, Sheldon decides that if someone as broken as Leonard can go on with his life, he can get passed this one little bump in the road.

By sheer coincidence I’m sure, Leonard gets to introduce Sheldon for his award. While Leonard reads a letter that Sheldon’s mother had sent, and further deals with his mommy issues, Penny gets him drunk when he admits he’s starting to feel a bit woozy. Apparently Sheldon can feel the effects of alcohol rather quickly, he cuts Leonard off and storms the stage. He tells a few jokes only funny to a physicist and insults members of the audience.

We don’t get to see the rest of his speech, it can only be assumed it went further downhill. The next morning a pants less Sheldon greets Penny and Leonard in the kitchen, wondering what happened to him and his pants. They gleefully tell him the answer is on youtube. Unfortunately for us, we don’t get to see much more than Sheldon taking his pants off. And don’t bother trying to look up “physicist melt down”, there’s no hidden treasure from this episode. You’re slacking Lorre, that would’ve been the ace in the hole for this episode.

While Sheldon episodes are never the best of Big Bang, this was a pretty good one. But still, I feel like we’re all just sitting here, waiting for the “ha ha why are we dating?” one-liners to turn into those “no, really. why?” lines. Soon though. I feel a change coming.

Things to say to your Lima beans to help them grow:

Where’s 70 children when you need them?
    I appreciate your pretense
    Oh! The simulated horror!
This is great! I had a suit like this when I was six!
    Don’t worry, you’re surrounded by your C-Men.
    Just the Asians!
