The Big Bang Theory: The Wheaton Recurrence

Has that day come? Are they breaking up? Nope, well. No. Kind of. For now we have the distraction of Sheldon’s arch nemesis, Wil Wheaton.

Penny and Sheldon are in bed after a little late night romp and Leonard drops a bomb, he says I love you. Penny says thanks and rolls over, goodnight. Uh oh. Leonard becomes a pissy mess and the boys are noticing. Walowitz and Raj spend a lot of time guessing what the problem is once they find out its about his relationship, but Sheldon can care less. They have a bowling game tonight!

When at the bowling alley Stuart reveals that one of his team members couldn’t make it, so he got a substitute, Wil Wheaton. Sheldon confronts him and Wil is ecstatic that he still occupies some space in Sheldon’s head. The problems that Penny and Leonard are having take over the game and Penny storms out after Leonard refuses to accept that Penny is not on the same wavelength as him.

The next day Sheldon stops by Penny’s with ice cream since that’s what the comics dictate stressed out woman eat (and they say ACK!) and tells her to patch things up with Leonard so they can have a rematch with high stakes tonight against Stuart’s team. Penny agrees and when she goes to talk to Leonard, he’s incredibly passive and is willing to put the whole thing behind them. Yay? It seemed forced in that Leonard-forced way…

When they get to bowling alley all things are going well, Stuart even offers up some nice advice about how opposites just work well together. The problem arises when Wil butts his head into the situation and explains a past relationship that went down the same path as Penny and Leonard’s and didn’t end well. After some words with Leonard Penny freaks out and leaves again, forcing a forfeit and Leonard knows that it’s over for him as well.

What were those high stakes in the bowling game? Well since Stuart won, he gets to see the boys dress up as female comic book heroes. It’s no surprise that Raj likes it and feels empowered, he’s so afraid of women that he probably thinks they hold some mystical power.

This episode reminded me of why I absolutely hated the movie 500 Days of Summer. I thought she led him on and he was such a sap he fell for it and was an idealist about a situation that everyone knew wasn’t going to end well. The pairing of Leonard and Penny is so far fetched in this situation, not so much in real life I think, that it was bound to end and they both knew it. There was so much joking about why are they even together between the two of them it had to end and thankfully it is sooner than later.

While deciding if it’s The Wesley Crushers, The Wesley Crushers or The Wesley Crushers always remember:

“That would explain my weepy days in the middle of the month. You know what I’m talking about.”
“Every time we’ve talked about unusual animal genitals you have some pretty strong and controversial opinions.”
    “Tweet that tweety bird!”
    “WHEATON!”
“I don’t know about you but I feel empowered.”
